Tools that turn operations data into something people can actually use

Operations teams run lean. Innovation debt piles up — not because the work does not matter, but because the day-to-day always comes first. Arbutus Visual Analytics builds practical tools: unique solutions to complex problems — clearer visibility, leaner workflows, and use of data that already exists.

Where innovation debt shows up

Seven years as a CPC Technologist at BC Hydro shaped how I think about operations-heavy organizations — from utilities to field teams everywhere. Most teams already know where the friction is; what is missing is priority, design, and build capacity.

Data that exists but never gets used

Smart metering data, SCADA event logs, inspection histories, outage records — operational environments generate significant data. So do chairlift monitoring systems, booking platforms, and rental fleets. In most cases it sits untouched.

Not because nobody sees the value, but because building something useful out of it has never taken priority over keeping things running. The value is there. The tools are not.

I help teams clarify what question they need answered, what data can support it, and what a minimum useful view or pipeline looks like — so the first version ships instead of stalling in the backlog.

Manual workflows that have never been streamlined

Inspection checklists on paper. Maintenance logs in spreadsheets. Shift handovers lost in email chains. Equipment inventory managed in someone's head. Whether it is a substation or a surf school, the pattern is the same — processes designed before better tools existed and never revisited.

They consume hours, introduce error, and store institutional knowledge in no system at all.

I map the real steps people take today, cut waste without asking teams to adopt complexity for its own sake, and build lightweight digital workflows where they earn their keep.

Visibility gaps between the field and leadership

The people making decisions cannot always see what is happening in the field. The crew on the ground cannot always see priorities from above. Reporting relies on manual compilation that is late and never complete.

Decisions get made on outdated information because the bridge between the two has never been built. Field crews deserve to see the results of their reporting, and managers deserve to decide with the best data available.

I design views, summaries, and feedback loops that connect those two worlds — so reporting is worth the effort and leadership can trust what they are looking at.

The people running these operations work hard. They deserve tools that respect their time. Arbutus builds those tools.
